We are now in the fourth phase of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, launched to hold large energy suppliers accountable for promoting energy saving practices among their customers. The larger aim behind the scheme is to help the UK Government reduce carbon emissions and lower the cost of energy. The scheme is aimed at reducing fuel poverty among low income and vulnerable households. For example, if you or someone who lives with you has a disability or illness that is worsened through exposure to the cold, or you are a household with dependent children and on a low income, you can get financial assistance to meet the costs of making your home more energy efficient. So far, over 2.3 million homes have benefited under the ECO4 scheme.
Grants are available for a range of measures, such as installing cavity wall insulation, loft insulation or replacing your current heating with more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as electric storage heaters. You do not have to repay the grant either.
If you are a tenant who meets the eligibility criteria, you can apply to the scheme as long as you have permission from your landlord. ECO4 could help you reduce your bills and create a better standard of living for you and your household.
Landlords can benefit from the scheme if they have tenants who receive certain benefits. You will need to encourage your tenant to apply directly given that the assessment is based on their status and not yours.
If you meet the criteria and are in receipt of any of the qualifying benefits you can apply to the scheme for help to make your home more energy efficient.
Some local authorities participate in a scheme called flexible eligibility, which may provide financial assistance to those who are not in receipt of benefits but need to make energy efficiency improvements to their home.
